Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) The national bird of the United States, the bald eagle (Haliaeetus lecuocephalus), reaches lengths of 31-37 inches (female being larger), with wing spreads of 70-90 inches, and weights of 8-15 pounds. Although it was an endangered species in the 1950's and 1960's due to pesticides (DDT), it has made a comeback. As a result of conservation measures, and the ban of several pesticides, bald eagles can be found throughout North America. Nesting populations can be found along the Atlantic coast, the Mississippi River drainage, and the Rocky Mountains as far south as Nevada. Color Variations of Bald Eagles While bald eagles are often identified by their white head and tail, different ages of eagles exhibit different amounts of white on their heads; 1 year old birds are uniformly brown in color and the beak and eye are dark; 2 year old birds have gray-brown or whitish underwing coverts, may have a white line on their head, and their back and bellies are speckled with white; 3 year old birds become lighter, with a light colored head and contrasting dark eye stripe, and the bill and eye become yellow; 4 year old birds are mostly dark with some white spots, the head and tail are generally white, but the tail may have a dark band at the end. Their heads will slowly get whiter, until they are completely white at age seven. One of the largest wintering populations of these birds in the lower 48 states can be found along the Mississippi River from southern Minnesota to northern Iowa. In some years hundreds of bald eagles can be seen along the river. However, numbers depend a lot on the weather. Because fish are one of the major food sources of bald eagles, they need open water where they can catch fish. When lakes, rivers and streams freeze up in many areas, hundreds of eagles may be seen on the upper Mississippi from December through February. We have seen as many as 35 eagles along a 2 mile stretch of Black Dog Road in Burnsville, MN in December, right after most of the northern lakes have frozen up. Most of these photographs were taken there. We have also seen as many as 150 eagles on our Natural History Tours, along a 3 mile stretch of the Mississippi River, near Wabasha, MN in February, when most lakes and rivers are still frozen. Hawks With the Harlans', light phase Red-tail and Cooper's Hawks, I just happened to be n the right spot, at the right time, and had a camera with me. I spotted the light phase Red-tailed Hawk, a year after I spotted the Harlan's Hawk, and only 1 mile away. The Cooper's Hawk was making a nest, and after I shot the photos, it flew across the road in front of me and landed in the tree, not 5 yards off the road. I've learned never to go anywhere without both my video and still camera, because I never know when I might see something I want to record. Plus, having a came along means I can deduct the trip from my taxes.. |
