Join Colorado native and outdoor photographer Mike Brooks, or nationally recognized wildlife researcher and naturalist T.R. Michels, on a tour of Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park. Mike Brooks spends many hours each year photographing the wildlife, flowers and scenery of the park. Mike will gladly tell you all he knows about the ecology of the park. T.R. Michels knows the park well because he lived in Colorado for many years, and spent many days in the park. While your are on your tour he will explain the ecology of the area, and the biology and behavior of the animals, and what we need to do to ensure their survival. Situated atop the Continental Divide, Rocky Mountain National Park is a beautiful mountain area consisting of several different ecological zones: including tundra, Alpine and sub-Alpine coniferous forests, hardwoods, meadows, rivers, creeks and lakes. While you are on your tour you may see 10-foot snowdrifts and glaciers in the summer; and several different ecosystems; such as alpine, tundra, meadows and riparian.
Rocky Mountain National Park is the showcase of the Rocky Mountains. With elevations ranging from 8,000 feet in the wet, grassy valleys, to 14,259 feet at the top of Longs Peak, visitors to the park have opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures. Elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes, cougars, eagles, hawks and smaller animals can be seen in the park. Wildflower-lovers are never disappointed in June and July when the meadows and hillsides are painted with the colors of the flowers. Autumn visitors can relax among the golden aspens or enjoy the bugling of the bull elk during the rut (late August -late October). The park has 359 miles of trail offer for hikers, backpackers and horseback riders. Fly fishers, birders and photographers can enjoy the beauty of the park. During the winter, snowshoers and cross-country skiers can enjoy the white-blanketed tranquility of the parks meadows and forests. There are 60 peaks rising above 12,000 feet in the park. Anyone visiting the park between Memorial Day and late autumn can see many of these peaks eye-to-eye by driving over Trail Ridge Road. Topping out at 12,183 feet, this road is the highest, continuous paved road in the United States. Rocky Mountain National Park was recently rated by the Discovery Channel as the best place in North America to see wildlife. View Wildflowers seen in the park and other areas of Colorado. |
