Moose

Moose may reach heights of 7 1/2 feet at the shoulder, lengths of 7-9 feet, males weigh 900-1,400, females 700-1,00 pounds, live 15-20 years. They usually from early September through early November, with peak breeding (about 80 percent) in late September and again (10 percent) a month later; gestation is 220-246 days with 1-2 calves born may-June. Their color is dark reddish brown, lighter in summer, with nearly black legs and belly. They have a bulbous nose, an obvious hump at the shoulder and males often have one or more dewlaps or "bells" hanging from the neck. The front hoof tracks are 5-6 inches, the hind hoof is slightly smaller, and the hind hooves fall near or to the side of the fore hooves; two dots may appear just behind the hoof marks in mud or snow as a result of the dewclaws touching the ground. Their antlers are palmated and may reach 4-6 feet wide.

The males often thrash shrubs with their antlers, and make wallows in wet or muddy areas during the rut, to get urine and mud on themselves as a sign of dominance and to attract females. During the rut males bellow, grunt and grown; females often use long, drawn-out moans.

There may be as many as eight subspecies of moose (Alces alces) found in the coniferous forests of Europe, Asia and North America. Currently, many biologists recognize five subspecies: Alces alces alces, the European elk, which ranges through northern Europe. Alces alces americana, the eastern moose, which is found in eastern Canada and north-eastern US. Alces alces gigas, the Alaskan moose, mainly found in Alaska and Canada's Yukon. Alces alces shirasi, the Shiras moose, limited to southern Canada and northern US, Alces alces andersoni, Western Canada's Manitoba moose, which also ranges through parts of the northern US. Alces alces cameloides, the Siberian moose, which is confined to eastern Siberia, Mongolia and Manchuria. The American moose has 70 chromosomes, the European moose has 69. The moose of North America are generally divided into three, and sometimes four subspecies.
