 Wolves

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) inhabits northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and a large geographic range in Alaska, Canada, Europe, Middle East and Asia. Originally they also lived in Israel and Egypt. There were originally 23 subspecies of gray wolves in North America, and another 15 subspecies in Europe, Asia and Africa. Eight of the subspecies are now extinct, five of them in North America.

There are about 10,000 wolves in Alaska. There are approximately 4,500 gray wolves in the lower 48 states, with about 3,000 of those in Minnesota. The wolves in Minnesota have been referred to as the eastern timber wolf (Canis lupus lycaon). However, recent studies have shown that the wolves in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are the Great Plains Wolf, or Buffalo Wolf (Canis lupus nubilus), which was thought to be extinct by 1926. They may be gray, reddish, black or white in color and range from 2-2.5 feet tall and from 4-5 feet long. Male wolves weigh an average 90 pounds; females average 80 pounds. They can run 35 mph and jump 12 feet. They can live up to 13 years in the wild.

Wolves generally live in packs with 8 to 35 members. The leader of the pack is the alpha male, his mate is the alpha female. They mate for live and are the only wolves in the pack that breed. Wolves mate in the winter and about 9 weeks later 2 to 14 pups are born. Other pack members, which are generally the offspring of the alpha pair, help take care of newborn pups for the first weeks. Within 3 to 5 months the pups are able to travel with the pack.
