"The most versatile hunting writer, seminar speaker and author in North America."
T. R. Michels is nationally recognized for his action-packed, informative seminars based on his experience as a wildlife researcher and professional guide. As a hunting seminar speaker for seventeen years he has appeared at the Deer and Turkey shows in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin; and at the Chicagoland Sport Show, Chicago Sport Show, Denver Sportsmen's Show, Eastern Iowa Sport Show, Gulf South Hunting and Fishing Show, Louisiana Sportsmen's Show, Michigan Outdoorama, Milwaukee Sentinel Sport Show, Minneapolis Sport Show, Minnesota Game Fair and the Quad Cities Outdoor Show. He has also been the featured speaker at the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association banquet, the Iowa Bowhunters Association banquet, and the Christian Deer Hunters Association banquet.
T.R. has spent several years studying game animal behavior, including communication through vocalization, scents and visual stimuli; and ways to use this knowledge to attract game. He conducted a seven-year study to determine how weather and lunar factors affect deer movement and rut related activity; and the effectiveness of using scrape activity to determine when and where to hunt whitetail bucks. He conducted a four-year study to determine how seasonal and current weather conditions and lunar factors affect turkey movement, gobbling, and breeding activity. He has also conducted a study to determine how elk activity is affected by meteorological conditions and lunar factors; what calls elk use and how they use them; and how daily and seasonal bugling are affected by age, dominance and competition among bull elk.
As a professional guide/outfitter, and owner of T.R. Michels Guide Service T.R. specializes in trophy whitetail, turkey and bear hunts in Minnesota, and has guided in the Rocky Mountains for elk and mule deer. His clients include former Federal Cartridge Corporation owner Alan Newcomb, Trebark Camouflage designer Jim Crumley, former Feather Flex Decoys manager Dave Berkley, retired Minnesota Vikings coach Bud Grant, retired professional wrestlers Vern Gagne and Paul Ellering, and outdoor writers Kathy Etling, Mark La Barbara, Mike Strandlund, Norman Strung and John Zent.
As the owner of Trinity Mountain Outdoors T.R. is also active in the design of hunting products. He is the designer/owner of Konifer camouflage (formerly in Cabela's), Field "Stalker" camouflage (formerly in Herter's) and is the designer of Total camouflage. He devised the Daily Deer Movement Indicator, the Moon Indicator, the Rut Phase Indicator and the Rut Indicator, which predict deer movement based on weather conditions, lunar factors, and rut activity. He also devised the Turkey Activity Indicator, which predicts daily turkey activity based on weather conditions; and the Turkey Breeding Phase Indicator, which describes the various phases of the turkey breeding-season, and when they should occur. He is the innovator of the Feather Flex Upwind goose decoy, their bedded deer/elk/antelope decoys, their rabbit decoy, and the influence behind their strutting turkey decoy. His research on goose behavior is the influence behind the white crescent found on many goose flags and goose decoys. He has also consulted on the design of elk, goose and turkey calls.
As an outdoor writer for seventeen years, T.R. has written articles for: the National Rifle Association's American Hunter and InSights, the National Wild Turkey Federation's Turkey Call, Petersen's Bowhunting, North American Whitetail, Bow & Arrow Hunting, Buckmasters, Fur-Fish-Game, Bird Dog and Retriever News, Wildfowl and Waterfowl USA. He also writes for the Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin Sportsman magazines.
In addition, T.R. authors the "Herd Health/Nutrition & Deer Research" column in Rub Lines magazine, and the "Whitetail Biology and Behavior" column in Whitetail Fanatic magazine. He is also a regular contributor to Adventure Sports Outdoors, Dakota Outdoors, Fish and Game Finder and Midwest Outdoors; and has written for Dakota Country, the Christian Bowhunters Association "Speaking Out" magazine and the Christian Deer Hunters Association newsletter. He also writes for several hunting related Internet services: Banta Hunting, Bowhunitng.Net, Bowzone Canada, Fish and Game Finder, Hunting Net, Outdoors Central, Up North Outdoors, Wild Turkey Zone and Women Who Hunt.
T.R. has authored seventeen hunting related books, including the series entitled the Whitetail, Elk, Duck & Goose, and Turkey Addict's Manual; Hunting Northern and Western Game; the seven volume Deer Addict's Manual series; the Scrape Hunters Manual; and the three volume Outdoorsman's Cookbook series.
T.R. is also a "born again" Christian who provides hunting seminars and personal Christian testimony for sports clubs, private functions and fund raisers; and his own personal Christian testimony and outreach seminars for church wild-game banquets, father-son dinners and other Christian related events. As a result of his life experiences, and because he wanted to share his belief in Christ with other outdoorsman T.R. began publishing the Christian Witness newsletter in 1993. While giving seminars at the Denver Sportsman's Show in 1995, T.R. met Nick Gray, editor of Rocky Mountain Bowhunter magazine and sports medicine physician Mike Books. They were interested forming a Christian based, family oriented, outdoorsman's group; in which Christians could share their passion for Christianity and a love of the outdoors with each other, and invite others who might not have a strong belief in Jesus to join them on hunting and fishing trips, and other outdoor activities. That desire eventually resulted in the formation of the Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America. The Christian Witness newsletter eventually became the basis for one of T.R.'s Christian books, Witness: A Christian Hunter's Insights and Outlook. After ten years of Bible research T.R. also authored the books Genesis: The Patriarchs and The Flood, Fact or Fiction? and Revelations: The Second Coming of Christ, The Battle Of Armageddon, and The Millenium. Although he manages and owns his business T.R. says, "I work for a Jewish Carpenter."

Other Seminars and Services
Many hunters don't realize that communication among game animals is often a combination of vocalizations and non-vocal sounds, plus body posture or movement, sometimes color, and scents. The posture or action of the animal often determines the difference between two similar sounding calls. During this seminar T.R. will discuss the vocalizations of whitetails, elk, turkeys, ducks and geese, and ways to call them.
Parent and Child Seminar
With the rise in animal rights activity, and the declining number of younger hunters, hunting as a sport and recreation is in jeopardy. Sport shows can provide a positive image of hunters as conservationists, and hunting as a needed game management tool, by promoting this seminar through print and television media. Children and their parents will learn about constitutional rights, laws, ethics, and the preservation of hunting rights, conservation, animal lore and hunting skills. The seminar includes a scavenger hunt and drawing for bows, air rifles, hunting boots, game calls, decoys and other products. Every child attending will receive a bag of free door prizes.
